WHO: superGARAGE

WHERE: The Boot

WHEN: Sunday, July 29

After an EP and two LPs, opening for the likes of Matthew Good and The Headstones, winning major kudos (and a good chunk of cash) from Yahoo! and BMG, superGARAGE finds itself in the thick of a national summer road tour… somewhere between Saskatoon and Edmonton to be exact. Trapped in a minivan for hours on end, the cell phone their only contact with the rest of the world, the boys were more than anxious to talk about writing, women… and cats?

Pique

: There are a lot of songs on your albums directly about or mentioning girls, but they don’t seem very happy.

Marco

: (laughs) Would I write if I were happy?

Pique

: Are you unlucky in love?

Marco

: It’s simpler, it’s easier, it’s more motivated, when it’s like that.

Pique

: When it’s sour? Have you had a lot of girls break your heart?

Marco:

Uhhh, well I guess there have been a few.

Pique

: How about now?

Marco

: Oh no, I’ve been in a healthy relationship for about a year. And I haven’t written a song since! (laughs)

Pique

: I had the women in the office to take a read through the lyrics and look at the cover of your latest CD , Demolition (depicting a cartoon female, holding her very ample bosom), and several of them said, "Guys, like that are messed up."

Marco

: Yeah, well it was actually supposed to be a mocking of a Maxim magazine, but no one ever got the joke. It was supposed to be based on the idea that you could just put a girl on the cover, have her doing something really lewd, and then all of a sudden you could sell your magazines. That’s what we were trying to do but no one seems to get it. Some are getting offended and others are loving it.

Pique

: And has it been selling a lot of CDs?

Marco

: It’s been doing fine. It’s independent, so our expectations are what they are.

Pique

: On a more serious note, the song Grand Designs is pretty dark. It’s about suicide.

Marco

: That one is more of a dream sequence. You know when you have these dreams that don’t make absolute sense, I’m talking about that. But I’m sure a lot of people take it that way.

Pique

: Looking over your last two CDs, many "teenage" issues are addressed.

Marco

: Yeah.

Pique

: What kind of kid were you in high school?

Marco

: I was a happy kid! I was a really happy kid.

Pique

: Where do you draw from for your song writing then?

Marco

: It’s more my own views. The songs aren’t always about me. Sometimes they’re about friends that you live through. I had a pretty wide section of friends. Even here in the band, we have a wide section of mentality. I try to represent that in any way I can. So all the music is real. It all comes from a real place.

Pique

: And when you write about things that are less than happy, you do seem to identify with a lot of people.

Marco

: Yeah, for me it’s a lot easier.

Pique

: Why not write about partying or good relationships?

Marco

: Well, some of the songs are. On A Summer Night is a party tune. But for me it’s never that straight ahead or cut and dry.

Pique

: So, what’s going on over there? There’s a lot of laughing and yeehaw-ing.

Marco

: Yeah, they’re trying to get my attention. They’re playing some crazy name game. That’s how you know you’ve been in a van too long. I don’t even think they know I’m doing an interview, they just think I’m talking to someone.

Pique

: What do you do to keep yourselves entertained. You’ve been on the road since the start of June.

Marco

: Soccer.

Pique

: Soccer? Isn’t that dangerous in a minivan with four guys?

Marco

: No, no! At every gas station and pit stop we send someone down the road for a pass.

Pique

: What else should we know about you before you reach Whistler?

Marco

: Ummm, two are single, two are hitched. Everyone’s got brown eyes. Oh, no, you mean the other stuff?

Pique

: (laughs) Well, marital status can be just as important. Depends who’s reading this.

Marco

: Hey, I’m gonna put on Robbie.

Rob

: Oh, man! If we could only get the cats out of this van!

Pique

: Cats?

Rob

: We inherited three cats last night. We left the window open in the van and now we have three cats.

Pique

: Did you realize they were there when you hit the road this morning?

Rob

: Well, yeah. But we couldn’t get rid of them, so we just sorta kept them. What are you doing?

Pique

: I’m actually interviewing you from Whistler. So don’t say anything too incriminating. So are you one of the hitched or one of the single guys?

Rob

: (laughs) Who wants to know?

Pique

: The readers! I was mentioning to Marco that several of your songs make you sound unlucky with the women. How are you doing?

Rob

: Uhhh, I’m not at liberty to discuss that. Here’s Adam.

Adam

: Hey! Are you gonna be at the rock and roll show? We haven’t been to the Boot in a while. Is it still a happenin’ spot?

Pique

: Of course.

Adam

: Do they still have the strippers?

Pique

: Three times a week.

Adam

: Oh. See that’s the problem. There’s no strippers on Sunday.

Pique

: No, they’re all in church. I’m afraid you’re out of luck. What other words of wisdom would you like to add.

Adam

: Live the rock and roll lifestyle during the day. Live the rock and roll lifestyle at night. That was advice to me from a guy in Trooper.

Pique

: So you’re living that life, that dream?

Adam

: Oh, yeah! Living in the back of a van!
