A Whistler man is facing charges after he allegedly crashed his vehicle while intoxicated, police said.
Just after midnight on Sunday, Jan. 31, police were dispatched to a collision on Alta Lake Road just north of Rainbow Park, where they located a 2015 Dodge Journey resting against a power pole on the side of the southbound lane. The vehicle had significant front-side damage on the driver side, police said.
Officers found a man in the passenger seat, who admitted to being the driver and operating the vehicle while drunk, according to RCMP. The 31-year-old Whistler man subsequently failed a breathalyzer test and was arrested.
Police are now looking for potential witnesses to the crash and advised anyone who may have "stopped, assisted or observed" the SUV to contact Whistler RCMP at 604-932-3044.
Backcountry skiers rescued from Cake Hole
A wrong turn in the backcountry led to a cold night outdoors for a group of skiers on Whistler Mountain this week.
Police received a 911 call the afternoon of Monday, Feb. 1 from a man who said he was lost with two other skiers.
A search was initiated at first light the following morning, when Whistler Search and Rescue managed to locate the group of Alberta and Whistler skiers in the Cake Hole area. The area has been a hotspot for search and rescue crews this winter.
"They got lost, followed some tracks and spent an unplanned night in the backcountry," Whistler RCMP Staff Sgt. Steve LeClair said.
The group did not sustain any major injuries before being evacuated out of the backcountry by helicopter, police said.
Two men caught in apparent drug deal
Two men were caught red-handed in an apparent drug deal this week and now face charges, police said.
Just before 1 a.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 2, officers patrolling the village observed one of the males "surreptitiously pass" the other man a plastic baggie of suspected cocaine, according to LeClair.
A 23-year-old U.K. citizen was arrested on trafficking and possession charges, while the second man, a 23-year-old Whistler man, was nabbed for possession of a controlled substance, police said.
Logging truck collision
Early in the day on Wednesday, Jan. 27, a southbound Honda Civic struck the rear axle of a logging truck on Hwy. 99, which was making a turn to cross the highway towards the log depot at Watt's Point, near Squamish.
Neither alcohol nor speed were believed to be factors, police said. However, visibility issues may have contributed.
The truck driver was not injured but the driver of the Honda had chest pain, seatbelt burn, and whiplash, according to police. He was transported to hospital for examination.
Squamish police investigating attempted fraud
Squamish RCMP is investigating an attempted scam that nearly defrauded a resident out of hundreds of dollars.
Police said the victim was provided a cheque for $3,250 and directed to deposit it into his bank account before transfering the money into a separate account. The victim reported it to the bank and was able to stop the transfer before it went through.
The investigation is ongoing.
