If enough people vote to support the development of a sustainability tour in Whistler, the community could be granted $5,000 to help make it happen.
A group called Alpine Initiatives (AI) wants to donate a total of $15,000 to three projects in three different North American mountain communities through its Grass Roots Grant initiative.
After Cheeying Ho of the Whistler Centre for Sustainability (WCS) heard about the contest through a call for proposals the organization's executive director submitted a WCS proposal for the creation of a self-directed walking and biking tour showcasing Whistler's many sustainability successes.
AI is asking Facebook users to help choose which three of six mountain project proposals should be granted $5,000. Voters simply visit the AI page on Facebook and cast a vote for the project the user prefers.
"We've blasted it out to the newspapers and our contacts at Whistler Blackcomb, for sure," said Ho of the efforts to spread the word about the voting opportunity.
If AI grants Whistler $5,000 Ho said the money would be used to develop a podcast, create some videos, develop an interactive and downloadable map and create then install some signs along the route.
"Whistler is a leader in sustainability due to the innovative and committed work of many organizations and businesses in our community," said Ho.
"We have a lot to be proud of and many success stories to share and showcase, and by doing so Whistler can help to raise awareness and inspire others to act."
