Thousands of spectators turned out to watch hundreds of road riders take to the streets of Yaletown this past weekend in a criterium where riders completed as many laps of the course as they could manage in a pre-set time limit.

In Category 1 and 2, which raced for 60 minutes, the Symmetrics Cycling team dominated, with Andrew Pinfold and Svein Tuft placing first and second, Christian Meier was fourth, and Whistler’s Will Routley finished seventh.

Still to come this season is the national road championship, in Quebec from July 5-11, followed by the annual B.C. Superweek; the Tour de White Rock July 13-15, the Tour de Gastown on July 18, and the Tour de Delta from July 20 to 22.

Swimmers take to open water

The annual Canada Day Challenge Open Water Swim took place at Sasamat Lake in Port Moody this past week, with hundreds of swimmers from across the Lower Mainland and Washington coming out to swim 4 km, 2 km and 1 km races.

In the 2 km race, Whistler’s Nils Robinson placed fourth overall and first in the 30 to 34 age group with a time of 27:55 — just 0.34 seconds back of second place overall.

Trent Argent was 11 th overall and second in the men’s 40 to 44 race in 29:51.

In the 1 km event, Sherri Flick placed 25 th and first in the 35 to 39 age category in 20:51.

Crankworx seeking volunteers

Organizers of the 2007 Kokanee Crankworx mountain bike festival are recruiting volunteers to help out for some or all of the nine-day event. Volunteer positions available include the Sport Crew, which helps to set up, maintain and take down competition venues; Stage Crew, which helps to set up and tear down the stage, and assist bands and technical crews; Competitor Relations; Media/VIP Accreditation; Expo Crew, which works with vendors and sponsors at the expo site; and Logistics Assistant to help organize volunteers and shifts.

More than 900 volunteer shifts need to be filled over the festival. All volunteers who can contribute a minimum of two six-hour shifts will be given a T-shirt, be entered in daily draws for industry swag, and receive tickets to attend the volunteer appreciation party.

If you can help out during the festival, which is July 21-29, visit www.crankworx.com .

Still time to register for Squamish Tri, and expect road closures

At press time there were still a handful of spots open for the 2007 Squamish Triathlon, taking place on July 8. Participants can do this Olympic distance race — 1,500 metre swim, 37 km bike and 10 km trail run — as a solo or as part of a relay team of three. This is the 10 th anniversary of the race, which was started as a memorial to local triathlete Bob McIntosh following his death in 1997. For more information visit www.squamishtriathlon.org .

During the race there will be several temporary road closures in the Squamish area:

Alice Lake Provincial Park will have limited access from 6:30 a.m. to 11 a.m. on Sunday, July 8, and the access road will be closed from 9 a.m. to 10:30 a.m.

Highway 99 at the Alice Lake intersection will be closed in both directions from approximately 9:20 a.m. to 9:40 a.m. for cyclists. The southbound lane will also be closed until about noon, with traffic diverted onto the second northbound lane from Depot Road to Alice Lake Road.

Squamish Valley Road from Highway 99 to Government Road will be open to northbound traffic only from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., and southbound traffic will be diverted to Government Road.

Government Road from Axen Road to Squamish Valley Road will be closed to all northbound traffic from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

Ross Road will have limited access from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

Depot Road from Highway 99 to Ross Road will be closed to eastbound traffic from 9:20 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

Freestyle ski club gets grant

The Whistler Blackcomb Freestyle Club is the latest local non-profit group to receive a grant from the Whistler Blackcomb Foundation.

Last week the club received $1,600, which will go towards the purchase of a digital camera and laptop computer to assist with training. Coaches will be able to use the electronics to teach skiers the proper form and enhance their progression.

“This helps ensure that the athletes receive the support and mentoring necessary to perform at their highest level when competing at mountains throughout the province.”

The Whistler Blackcomb Freestyle Club competes at the provincial and national level in moguls, aerials, table top, halfpipe, and freeride contests.

Rebagliati to head snowboard program at Kelowna Mountain

Whistler may have a park and a ski run named after him, as well as a plaque in Mountain Square commemorating his triumphant return home from the 1998 Olympic Winter Games, but snowboard gold medalist Ross Rebagliati will soon be spending his winters in Kelowna.

This week Rebagliati announced that he would be taking on the position of Director of Snowboarding and Skiing for Kelowna Mountain, a new four-season resort being built on the forest fire impacted hills overlooking Okanagan Lake. Developers Nicola and Mark Consiglio are building a small ski resort with halfpipe and terrain park and a handful of runs on the property, a hockey and skating rink, a toboggan run, a golf course, and a suspension bridge connecting the resort to the Kettle Valley trail network. They have recently won approval for the first 55 lots on 36 of their 700-acres, now under construction, and plan to build a hotel as well as a mix of single family and multi-family housing on another 640 acres.

The Rebagliati Alpine Snowboard Training Academy will open next year, which is a camp-style program for snowboarders. As well, Rebagliati will help design and manage the snowboard and ski operations at Kelowna Mountain.

The ski area is at the same elevation as nearby Crystal Mountain, with slopes facing north instead of south.
