Weddings can be hell. Especially if you’re a bridesmaid.
Funnily enough it took a man to write a screenplay about it, but no matter, Alan "Amercian Beauty" Ball has produced one of the funniest, raciest and realistic portrayals of modern day women that has ever come to the stage.
Five Women Wearing the Same Dress, directed by Between Shifts Theatre’s Kathy Daniels, is centred around a wedding that most of the bridal party really don’t really want to be at.
The five bridesmaids, plus one completely fallible male, hide out in the bride’s sister’s bedroom to vent – and get bent. Each character eventually reveals their reasons for being a recluse from the "main event" with often hilarious, touching and shocking truths exposed. Among the party poopers are a lipstick lesbian, the pious cousin, the lascivious babe, the obsessive torch-holder and the petulant younger sister.
Daniels said the play is perfect for our picture perfect postcard town.
"I think Five Women is very contemporary and deals with an age group and attitude that people in Whistler can relate to. It’s a very meaningful piece, bringing up a lot of social issues, but it’s not preachy. It’s a bittersweet tour de force done in a comedic package."
Definitely for adults-only, Five Women Wearing the Same Dress is a joint presentation brought to you by Between Shifts Theatre, MY Place and The Whistler Arts Council.
