Last summer it was the Vancouver Canucks; this summer it will be Team Canada. Whistler’s Parks and Recreation Department confirmed this week that Whistler will play host to Team Canada’s training camp in August, prior to the inaugural World Cup of hockey. That not only means celebrities such as Wayne Gretzky, Mario Lemieux and Mark Messier will be in town preparing for the tournament, sports media from around the globe will be here to watch the training camp. The inaugural World Cup will involve eight nations: Canada, the U.S.A., Russia, Sweden, Finland, Germany, the Czech Republic and Slovakia. Games will take place from late August to mid-September in Europe, Canada and the United States. One game will be played in Vancouver. Edmonton Oilers general manager Glen Sather will manage the Canadian team but he has suggested the players should pick the coach. More details on the tournament are to be released at a press conference in Monday.
