The Whistler Blackcomb Foundation's 21st annual Telus Winter Classic fundraiser, which took place on Jan. 24 and 25, raised $280,000 — $43,000 more than 2013 and the most money ever raised by the event.

"It was our most successful year yet," said Mei McCurdy, the executive director of the foundation.

"We're absolutely thrilled. Last year we raised just over $237,000 and the total for last weekend at this point is $280,000.

"This includes all of our sponsors and team sales, the Winetastic event and, of course, the gala."

The funds raised by the foundation are spent in Whistler and throughout the region.

"All that money will go back into our local communities. At this point, we probably raise and donate approximately $600,000 to $700,000 a year. This just means we will be able to help a lot more organizations and we're so happy to be able to do that as well," she added.

The $43,000 increase in the funds raised in 2014 means that more money will be given to organizations.

"That's why I think I am so excited about it; the extra amount we made this year will go directly back into the community," she said.

"And it is all down to the fact that we had a record number of participants, record number of teams, we always sell out of our events and we have for the last 10 years, but this year we sold out a lot earlier than we have in the past. It's been a really good year."

The next deadline for funding applications is April 1. For more information visit: www.whistlerblackcombfoundation.com.
