Terry Fox Run returns Sept. 17

Runners, volunteers needed

This September will mark the 26 th year since Terry Fox started his cross-Canada run to raise funding for cancer research, and the 25 th anniversary of the first annual Terry Fox Run held just months after he succumbed to the disease. If anything the event is getting bigger as the years go on, with each year setting a new record in terms of attendance and funds raised.

To date more than $400 million has been raised by the Terry Fox Foundation, with events taking place across Canada and around the world.

Whistler’s Terry Fox Run is even ahead of the curve, with last year’s run raising a record $12,500.

Organizers are hoping to match or beat that tally at this year’s run, which is scheduled for Sunday, Sept. 17 at a new venue, Meadow Park Sports Centre. The Four Seasons Whistler Resort is once again the headline sponsor for the run, which gets underway at 10 a.m., rain or shine. Registration starts at 9 a.m.

There are both 5 km and 10 km routes, and participants can run, walk, ride, skate, or push strollers through the course. This year’s long course goes from Meadow Park to the loop around the Whistler Golf Course before heading back to the sports centre for the after-party which includes food, refreshments and music provided by Guitar Doug.

Once again Whistler Fire Services will be at the event with firefighters running the course in their equipment. RCMP members will also be racing in their uniforms.

This year participation is by donation, and all participants will receive raffle tickets for draw prizes, including accommodation at Four Seasons resorts.

Pledge sheets are available online at www.terryfox.org and sign-up sheets at the start.

Organizers are also looking for marshals to help out. If you can spare a few hours, from 8 a.m. to noon, contact Mary Vaughan at 604-966-2607.
