Freeski festival becoming a five-day event

With Whistler skiers dominating on the international freeski circuit, Whistler-Blackcomb has announced plans to build a five-day festival – the Big Mountain Experience – around the Canadian Freeskiing Championships Jan. 7-12.

At last year’s Whistler-Blackcomb Canadian Freeskiing Championships, local skiers Pierre-Yves LeBlanc, Hugo Harrison, Jenn Ashton and Aleisha Cline took four out of the six medals, while other locals were strong challengers, including Mike Stevenson in fourth place and Robin Coucelles, Jon Johnston and Leif Zapf-Gilje in seventh, 11 th and 15 th respectively.

Once the freeski contest is completed, the festival will feature:

• Canadian Avalanche Association workshops and fundraiser;

• A Whistler Freeride Team open house, with workshops on freeriding and telemark skiing.

• Product launches and demo days around the mountains.

• Nightime festivities, which are still to be announced, will likely include slide shows, costume parties and movie screenings.

More information on the Big Mountain Experience will be available as the event gets closer. Stay tuned for details.
