What: Meet the Artist

Who: Mike Svob

Where: adele-campbell Fine Art Gallery

When: Saturday, March 22, 5 to 9 p.m.

Perusing over popular Canadian artist Mike Svob’s work, it’s safe to say he likes light. He must like colour too and his cult following suggests he’s spot-on when it comes to interpreting the landscape before us.

How does he see and recreate the colourful magic on our horizon? Perhaps the same way a lot of transplants around here do. By falling in love with the wilderness.

The Welland, Ontario native travelled extensively across the country before falling in love with B.C., now his home and the subject behind most of his work. The contemporary impressionist is well known for his bold and bright interpretations in water colour, acrylic and oil. Svob is admired by art lovers and students alike for his ability to bring out the passion in wilderness, the movement of light and nature’s interaction with people through some extraordinary street scenes.

"The play of light, the dance of the trees in the wind, the waves crashing on the rocks. As an artist I try to capture these moments, distil out what is unnecessary to me and leave the viewer with an impression of the Canadian landscape that will endure through time," said the award-winning Svob.

This is his third exhibit at the adele-campbell Fine Art Gallery, which will feature not only his West Coast works but a cross-section of images from across the land. Titled Canadian Perspectives , more than 30 paintings will be on display depicting mountains, rivers, coastlines and streetscapes. Expect colourful canvases from Jasper, Banff, Nova Scotia and everywhere in between.

Svob attended Niagara College and received his Bachelor of Arts from the University of Western Ontario before studying with many well-known artists. He has created more than 15 murals, locally and internationally, including a collaboration with Alan Wylie at Vancouver International Airport. He is past President of the Federation of Canadian Artists and a SFCA member. For Mike, his life is his art and all it encompasses. Pick up some tips from the man himself at the adele-campbell show this Saturday afternoon.
