The Whistler Film Festival Society will screen the Canadian-made documentary The Corporation this week as part of the recently launched Reel Alternatives monthly film series.

It’s likely a coincidence that the month designated around the world to celebrate progress and commemorate struggles by socialist groups and their sympathizers will host a film the Globe and Mail called "the next Bowling for Columbine" for its provocative criticisms on rampant capitalism and consumer culture.

Co-directed by Mark Achbar, previously known for his work with Manufacturing Consent: Noam Chomsky and the Media, and Jennifer Abbott, and written by Joel Bakan, author of The Corporation: The Pathological Pursuit of Profit, the documentary examines, dissects and psychoanalyzes the modern corporation.

The findings are anything but encouraging but that hasn’t interfered with the multiple standing ovations the film has received at Sundance, the Vancouver International Film Festival and other esteemed venues, making it one of the most talked about films in recent release.

Regardless of one’s socio/political bent or preconceived notions about outspoken interview subjects such as Noam Chomsky, Michael Moore and Howard Zinn, The Corporation is an important film that will continue to inspire academic, political and artistic discussion in the years ahead.

Reel Alternatives was launched in mid-April with the mountaineering saga Touching the Void. The film was so popular the two Monday evening screenings sold out in advance. The film was consequently booked for another week at the Village 8. However, the remaining Reel Alternatives films are to proceed as exclusive engagements.

June’s feature will be Academy Award-nominated animation film The Triplets of Belleville.

The Corporation screens at Village 8 Cinema on Wednesday, May 12 and Thursday, May 13 at 6:30 and 9:30 p.m. Tickets are $8.50, available in advance from the Escape Route and from Village 8 after 6 p.m. on both days.
