The godfather of hip hop Afrika Bambaataa comes to Whistler for one-night only on Feb. 19 at Garfinkel’s.

Bambaataa, otherwise known as Kevin Donovan, was instrumental in the early development of hip hop in the 1970s. The early pioneer was recently honoured for his contributions to hip hop last September when he was one of nine nominated for the 2008 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Inductions.

Bambaataa’s life reads like a history book: he gave birth to the Zulu Nation in The Bronx, New York where his block parties moved into larger listening circles such as the Ritz, The Peppermint Lounge and the Roxy.

He invented genres such as electro funk with his hit single Planet Rock, which later influenced many styles of electronic, dance and techno music.

He led the very first European hip hop tour, was one of the key originators of break beat djing and was the first to mix hip hop with rock.

He leaves a hip hop legacy behind him, and in front of him, as he never stops spinning his passion, which has resulted in more than 20 albums.

Advance $15 tickets are available at The Circle or Billabong.
