The Magic Flute comes to Whistler

WHAT: The Magic Flute

WHERE: Maurice Young Millennium Place

WHEN: Nov. 18, 2 p.m.

The Alta Lake School is presenting Vancouver Opera's touring ensemble in The Magic Flute. This abridged version of Mozart's most popular opera is a fun-filled romp through a land of fantasy.

The Magic Flute is like a fairy-tale set to music. Prince Tamino sets out on a quest for the lovely Princess Pamina, his true love. He must do battle with the Evil Queen of the Night, aided by Papageno the Bird-man and the wise Sarastro – and, of course, there is the magic flute.

This family-friendly production is designed to be a perfect introduction to the wonder of opera. Selected pieces from The Magic Flute are presented in English (instead of the usual German), while a narrator tells the story behind the music. At the end of the show, a question-and-answer period allows children (and adults) to learn more about the story, the composer and opera in general.

This production of "The Magic Flute" is a fund-raiser for The Alta Lake School, a Waldorf-inspired independent school in Whistler. "We wanted to do something which would be consistent with the values of our school in terms of art and culture. At the same time, we wanted to contribute to the cultural scene in the community," says Laurie Cooper, a member of the board of directors for The Alta Lake School.

In December, The Alta Lake School will present a Christmas concert with "musica intima," the Juno-award nominated choral ensemble. For more information about either production or The Alta Lake School, contact Vicky Bunbury at 604-932-4127. Tickets for The Magic Flute are available through Ticketmaster, Millennium Place, and from The Alta Lake School.
