The Overcomers bring a little joy to the stage

Husband and wife duo to play BAG

You can read their name and get a good sense of what The Overcomers are all about.

"We have just overcome lots of obstacles and lots of our songs are just kind of born out of those kinds of sitatuations," says Anne Iacovone, one half of the husband-and-wife duo. "We're strong because we've overcome so much."

Formerly known as the Iacovones, Anne has been writing and performing with her husband Mario for the length of their 15-year marriage. It's gospel music on the hush-hush, joyful folk-rock with a Nashville bent. It's positivity for no other reason than to be positive because that's what's inside of them and it's gleefully unpretentious.

"We just want to play music and these are the kinds of songs that we write," she says. "The focus in this is our journey and we've been writing songs since we've been going through life."

Iacovone says most people can relate to obstacles she's writing about so there's usually a connection between the band and the audience whenever they perform.

"Our shows are an opportunity for people to connect. We're not trying to do anything except just play our music and hopefully people like it," she says with a laugh.

Their show at the Brackendale Art Gallery will feature a mix of covers and originals culled from their forthcoming album, due out this fall. Recorded at their home studio with Mario producing, the album will feature contributions from Andre and Samantha Chamberlain, who split their time between the Overcomers and moody indie project Step Twelve. They'll be backing the Overcomers on stage as well."

In past shows, Iacovone says the Overcomers have invited more musicians to join them on stage but it wasn't possible this time around.

"The gig came up on us quite quickly, so the time frame was short," she says. "We would like to have included more people but we just didn't have that time to collaborate or practice with people."
