The Point puts the fun into fundraising with Sin & Gin Joint 

The annual event visits the 1940s with gypsy jazz and great food and you're invited to join them

The Point will be jumping into the 1940s at the artist-run centre's annual fundraiser, Sin & Gin Joint — and along with some hopping music, there is the era's aesthetic to get into.

"A big part of it this year is that it is a dress-up night, we're wanting people to wear attire from that era," says organizer Stephen Vogler.

"We're flexible. To dress like the 1940s, you can get away with a lot of different possibilities. You can wear a uniform, as well as a suit.

"I have one dress-up outfit, but fortunately it looks 1940s-ish! People will get away with a black jacket and a white shirt and tie."

The event takes place on Saturday, June 24, at 6 p.m.

The event is The Point's most important fundraiser, with monies raised going into its arts, music and show programming, workshops and children's camps.

"We have a different scene every year for the fundraiser. Last year it was a Midsummer Night's Murder Mystery. We try to come up with a great theme every year. Everybody likes the '40s swing scene. It's fun," Vogler says.

"We get a few small grants to keep the wheels turning, but this is a critical part of our year's operations."

Food is also a big part of the fundraising evenings at The Point, Vogler says.

"We have three different chefs in a cook-off, not so much a contest, but they are each coming up with their best creative dishes. They are each doing a different dish," he says.

The chefs include Vancouver-Whistler film industry veteran Chef Carson, making a baked apricot glazed salmon salad dish, Chef Billy Branigan with a marinated butter chicken and garlic-sesame naan, and Chef Neil Kearns' classic beef Wellington.

Each dish is paired with wine.

Dessert is Aphrodite's organic pie.

And Vogler says there will be vegetarian options offered.

"They are different courses and everyone will get a chance to try each dish," he explains.

"Before all that, everyone gets a complimentary Hanky Panky gin cocktail, which we invented."

And, of course, there's a big show with gypsy jazz band Swing 2 Beat coming up from Vancouver.

"They are just a wonderful band to dance to. Such great gypsy jazz ," Vogler says.

There will also be a photo booth and Vogler said they would be selling space on a painting of the old lodges on Alta Lake (where The Point is located), which means your name is added to the painting.

"It's a fun way to raise funds," Vogler says.

"The painting will stay in The Point lodge afterwards."

Art will also be a live auction and silent auction.

Tickets are $80 per person for dinner and show, and $35 for show only. They can be purchased at or at Armchair Books.
