RCMP GARAGE SALE>>

Saturday, Aug. 17 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the RCMP detachment. Great bargains and delicious baked goods. Items in good condition are also needed for sale. Donations of household items, toys, sporting goods and clothing are welcome and can be dropped off at the detachment until the date of the sale. All proceeds will go to the Dandelion Daycare Society.

GRIZZLY & BLACK BEAR PRESENTATION>>

Stephen Herrero, renowned grizzly and black bear biologist from the University of Alberta, will speak at Millennium Place on Wednesday, Aug. 28. This is a joint presentation with the Whistler Naturalists and the JJ Whistler Bear Society. Herrero is the first speaker in a monthly series for the Whistler Naturalists during the 2002-2003 season.

CREEKSIDE STREET FESTIVAL>>

The first annual festival celebrating life in the Creekside with children’s activities and performances, live street entertainment, a beer garden and lots more. The festival takes place on Saturday, Sept. 7 from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m.

THE BIG BANK THEORY>>

Sea to Sky entertainment has postponed the shooting of the Big Bank Theory, a locally produced feature film. Instead of shooting it in three to four pasts over the summer/fall, it is now scheduled to shoot in one continuous flow from Sept. 3 to Sept. 15. WHISTLER WRITER’S WEEKEND WORKSHOP>>

The weekend workshop from Aug 16-18 still has room. Keynote speaker Andreas Schroeder (co-chair of UBC’s Creative Writing program), leads the Whistler Writer’s weekend workshop. Interested applicants should submit a manuscript no longer than 4,000 words. Writers receive both individual feedback from Schroeder as well as group feedback. The fee for the workshop is $140 for the weekend, or for individual lectures which take place Saturday, the fee is $15 for one, $25 for two. Contact Stella Harvey at 604-932-4518.

SUMMER READING CLUB>>

The Whistler Public Library is launching its summer reading program for children ages 3 to 9 called Booked for the Summer. Special programs for children will be held on Wednesdays in August. Sessions for 5 to 9 year olds will be held from 4-5 p.m. or 7-8 p.m. There will also be a session from 11 a.m. to noon for preschoolers aged 3 to 4. Pre-registration is important. Fill out a form at the Whistler Public Library.

This time they are racing against time to stop the evil Serleena, disguised as a lingerie model, from seeing through her dirty plot to destroy the earth. Volunteers needed for the Federation of B.C. Naturalists’ Fall General Meeting Sept. 20-22. There will be a wide range of speakers and field trips. Confirmed speakers include: Tom Hurd (Banff Wildlife Specialist); Jack Souther (volcanoes); Kathy Martin (alpine bird migration); Morgan Wells (traditional plant use); Karl Ricker (glaciology); and Michael Allen (black bear and cougar researcher). WSFG is a non-profit charitable organization whose purpose is to restore the health of Whistler’s watersheds to their utmost potential for people and fish through community partnerships, advocacy, education and projects.
