SKATESPACE. Some of the best skaters and best skate bands converge on the Whistler Skateboard Park Aug. 2-6.

SLO-PITCH NATIONALS. Slo-pitch teams from all over converge on Meadow Park and Spruce Grove Park Aug. 2-6 for a ball tournament.

HOPS AND CROPS/WHISTLER FARMERS’ MARKET. Micro-breweries join the weekly farmers’ market this weekend, Aug 4-5, 11 a.m.-4 p.m. in the Upper Village, between the Chateau Whistler and Glacier Lodge.

LIBRARY BOOK SALE. The Whistler Public Library is selling used paperbacks Saturday, Aug. 4 at the IGA in Marketpalce.

SQUAMISH DAYS/LOGGER SPORTS. The annual festival and demonstration of logging skills takes place Aug. 5 at Brennan Park in Squamish.

GRAND OPENING PLAY STRUCTURE. The Eric Scragg play structure has been donated by the Fairmont Chateau Whistler and moved to the lot behind Marketplace. Grand opening of the facility is Wednesday, Aug. 8 at 11 a.m. Face painting, balloons, and a magic show are part of the festivities.

STAYING SAFE IN BEAR COUNTRY. Develop a better understanding of bears and bear behaviour, so bears and people can coexist. Wednesday, Aug. 8, 7-9 p.m. Part of a series of Bear Smart presentations at Millennium Place which take place every other Wednesday. Call Sylvia Dolson at the J.J. MEETINGS/WORKSHOPS

WHISTLER COUNCIL MEETING. There’s only one meeting this month, on Tuesday, Aug. 7 at 7 p.m. in council chambers, municipal hall.

WRITERS’ GROUP. How would you like to get together with other writers of fiction to share our work, provide each other with support and feedback and brainstorm ways to get out work published. Interested? If so, please call Stella at 932-4518 for more information.

SUMMER READING CLUB. The Whistler Public Library’s Summer Reading Club is held on Wednesdays from July 11 to Aug. 15. There is a session for preschoolers from 11 a.m. to noon and two sessions for 5-9 year olds: from 4 to 5 p.m. and from 7 to 8 p.m. There will be stories, songs, crafts and a costume party to wind up the club. HELPING HANDS

WHISTLER FISHERIES STEWARDSHIP GROUP — is planning a series of volunteer action days this summer to restore and enhance fish habitat around the Whistler Valley. Volunteers donate a few hours of their time and learn much about Whistler’s aquatic ecosystem and the animals that depend on them. This is a great chance to participate in the conservation of Whistler’s natural environment. For more information call Lisa or Veronica at 935-8323.

PEMBERTON MEADOWS MUSIC FESTIVAL. Aug. 31-Sept. 3, requires food vendors, arts/crafts vendors, musicians, ticket agents and volunteers. Please contact Barry at 604-951-0091.

WHISTLER ANIMALS GALORE. WAG is now a registered charitable organization and can issue tax receipts for gifts and donations made.

MY YOUTH CENTRE. Now open at Maurice Young Millennium Place. Activities include ping pong, pool table, Playstation, Nintendo, Internet access, big screen projection TV, day and overnight trips and tons of other activities. Needed are donations of videos, games, Playstation and Nintendo games and any other "cool" stuff. For hours of operation call 935-8410.

AT THE MOVIES

JURASSIC PARK III. Dinosaurs rule the earth, or at least a part of it, in director Joe Johnston’s sequel to the sequel of Stephen Spielberg’s Jurassic Park. At the Rainbow Theatre Aug. 3-9, at 7 p.m., also Aug. 4-5 at 5 p.m.

LEGALLY BLONDE. Reese Witherspoon plays a California girl who enrolls at Harvard law school to disprove the blonde stereotype. At the Rainbow Theatre Aug. 3-9 at 9 p.m.

BLACKCOMB. Last weekend for summer skiing and riding on Horstman Glacier.
