The Canadian Avalanche Foundation is hosting a dinner/dance at Dusty’s on Friday Jan. 10 at 7 p.m. to raise money for the Canadian Avalanche Association bulletin. The bulletin keeps backcountry enthusiasts up-to-date on avalanche conditions. The evening will be co-hosted by Justin Trudeau. Tickets are $150 each (with a tax receipt for $75 issued with each ticket). Election Day for the sixth council seat is on Saturday, Jan. 11 at Whistler Municipal Hall from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. NOTE: the polls are NOT at Myrtle Philip School. Go to Muni Hall.

A four-hour cross enduro country ski event around Lost Lake on Saturday, Jan. 18. Do it solo or in teams of three. Last year the winning skier shuffled 75 km in four hours. Proceeds go to the Whistler Jackrabbit program.

If all goes according to plan, six councillors and the Mayor should be getting down to business on Monday Jan. 13 2003 in council chambers, Municipal Hall. There will be a public hearing on a zoning amendment to incorporate liquor retail outlets at 7 p.m. before the council meeting begins.

Learn more about the wide sky above at the next Whistler Astronomy Club meeting. Everyone is welcome to join in the discussions about telescopes and upcoming astronomical events. Bob Mathus headed up the Olympic effort for Heber City, which was not a venue for the Salt Lake City games but created an Olympic Spirit of their own. Heber was very close to the Nordic event venue. Mathus will be speaking about ‘The Little Town That Could’ at the Chamber of Commerce luncheon at Bavaria on Wednesday, Jan. 15 at 11:45 a.m. RSVP to the Chamber.

There will be an information session about an ambitious scholarship program for St. George’s School in Vancouver, an independent school for boys. The school will be offering free tuition, boarding and all extras to talented boys in Grades 6-12, both nationally and internationally. The information session will be held at MY Place on Friday, Jan. 17 at 7 p.m.

Whistler Mountain opened on Thursday, Nov. 28. Gondola runs daily from 8:30 a.m. until 3 p.m.

Take the journey of a lifetime on Thursday’s at Millennium Place with the K2FILM Adrenaline Adventure Movies. The three movies are 118 Days in the Captivity if Ice, Mysterious Mamberamo and Mustang. The night starts at 6:30 p.m. Tickets are available at Millennium Place – $9.99 for adults, $5 for children and for all three films it’s $16. All the proceeds go to local charity Zero Ceiling.

WFSG is a non-profit charitable organization whose purpose is to restore the health of Whistler’s watersheds to their utmost potential for people and fish through community partnerships, advocacy, education and projects.
