The Top 10 lists at the Whistler Public Library

The end of the year always brings top 10 or 100 or 1,000 lists, so I thought I would look at the types of videos, DVDs, books, and music CDs that are the most popular (have been checked out the most times) at the library. The following are very interesting lists!

The following videos have been checked out over 250 times:

1. Sense and sensibility

2. Breakfast at Tiffany's

3. My left foot

4. Mediterraneo

5. Once were warriors

6. Gandhi

7. Three colours: Red, Blue, White

8. Forrest Gump

9. El mariachi

10 One flew over the cuckoo's nest

The following DVDs have been checked out over 50 times:

1. The usual suspects

2. Crouching tiger, hidden dragon

3. Moulin Rouge

4. The matrix

5. The shipping news

6. Gladiator

7. Chocolat

8. All the pretty horses

9. A beautiful mind

10. Monster's ball

The following compact discs have been checked out over 100 times:

1. Simon and Garfunkel's greatest hits

2. Pearl Jam

3. Eric Clapton unplugged

4. Kind of blue - Miles Davis

5. Debut - Bjork

6. Golden years of jazz

7. Erykah Badu live

8. More best of Leonard Cohen

9. Moondance - Van Morrison

10. Synkronized - Jamiroquai

The following adult non-fiction books have been checked out over 50 times:

1. Book of Thai cooking - Hilaire Walden

2. Becoming vegetarian - Brenda Davis

3. New complete book of the dog - Joyce Robins

4. The complete Canadian small business guide - Douglas A.Gray

5. Cover letters that knock 'em dead - Martin Yate

6. The seat of the soul - Gary Zukav

7. Country Living's country look - Mary Seers

8. International country - Judith Miller

9. Into thin air - Jon Krakauer

10. Home style: a hands-on guide to decorating - Linda Coville-Reeves

So I guess the typical reader of non-fiction is a vegetarian specializing in Thai cooking, who has a dog, owns his/her own business and is looking for another job to supplement his/her income (or lack thereof). He is also interested in spiritual matters, mountaineering and home decorating .

Novels by the following writers have been checked out over 50 times:

1. Maeve Binchy

2. Patricia Cornwell

3. John Grisham

4. James Patterson

5. Sidney Sheldon

6. David Guterson

7. Douglas Coupland

8. Frederick Forsyth

9. Tom Clancy

10. Roddy Doyle

It would seem that the most popular types of fiction read at the Whistler Public Library are Irish fiction (Maeve Binchy and Roddy Doyle), mysteries featuring forensic detectives (Patricia Cornwell), legal thrillers (John Grisham), thrillers (James Patterson, Sidney Sheldon), techno thrillers (Tom Clancy), suspense (Frederick Forsyth), and dysfunctional families (Douglas Coupland). Quite the combination, n'est-ce pas?
