The first snow of the season hit the ground on Tuesday and that can only mean one thing.

Ski and snowboard film premiere season is upon us.

One must-see movie to catch is The Uninvited: An All Girls Snowboard Movie, produced, directed and funded by local Jess Kimura at the Maury Young Arts Centre on Saturday, Oct. 6.

While the film features riders from around the world—captured over two seasons—it also includes Whistler-based Darrah Reid and Pemberton's Maria Thomsen. The film largely features street riding, documenting trips to Quebec and Salt Lake City.

For her part, Kimura told Snowboard magazine that the title is a little tongue-in-cheek, but holds some truth too.

"It's so hard to get on a dude's film crew, or even back when we were kids and nobody wanted to bring the little sister to the skate sessions or neighbourhood hangouts. We're girls, we are never invited," she said. "It's kind of a joke, but there's definitely some truth to it."

The film is screening at 7 p.m. for an all-ages crowd and again at 9 p.m. for a 19-plus audience.

Tickets are $12 at artswhistler.com.

Whistler Wine Walk

Every Friday in October from 5 p.m. until 7 p.m., five Whistler galleries will be serving up B.C. wine tastings and hors d'oeuvres along with their art.

The new shoulder-season initiative spearheaded by Tourism Whistler is called Whistler Wine Walk. Participating galleries include The Gallery at the Maury Young Arts Centre, the Adele Campbell Fine Art Gallery, Mountain Galleries at the Fairmont, the Audain Art Museum and the Whistler Contemporary Gallery.

During the self-guided tour, galleries will also be featuring live painting, artist-in-residences or other interactive activities.

Live! show to kick off

The first event in the Arts Whistler Live! series has been revealed.

Vancouver burlesque troupe The Geekenders are coming to the Maury Young Arts Centre on Nov. 17 to perform their pop culture cabaret Full Frontal Nerdity. The show combines "the irreverence of the Muppets and the polished showmanship of a Vegas showgirl revue" with "all your favourite fandoms, including Harry Potter, Star Wars and Superman," according to Arts Whistler.

Stay tuned for more information on tickets and the rest of the series lineup.

Make a mini mosaic

The rainy fall season is the perfect time to head indoors and learn a new craft.

To that end, Arts Whistler's next Art Lab is Mini Mosaic Making, in which participants will arrange small tiles to create the pattern of their choice. The class will cover the basic techniques of mosaic making, the type of tools to use, and the materials involved.

It takes place on Oct. 11 from 6:30 to 9 p.m. (For ages 16 and older).

The cost is $25 for Arts Whistler members and $30 for non-members. To register visit artswhistler.com.
