The Volume of African talent

Sunday at the GLC

South African beats are steeped in everything from hip hop to rock and dub to jazz in the The Heart Boogey Tour on Sunday, July 2 at the Garibaldi Lift Company.

The Outdoor Adventures-presented show features South African hip-hop ambassadors Tumi and the Volume alongside singer/songwriter Zaki Ibrahim, Nigerian-born MC Isis and Toronto’s DJ Nana.

Tumi and the Volume first took Canada by storm after headlining alongside K’naan for the African Way Tour in February 2005. The tour sparked a wild fire of word-of-mouth recommendations and suddenly the troupe was touring stages throughout Africa, Europe and North America, performing alongside the likes of The Roots, The Cardigans, Coldplay, Blackalicious, Black Eyed Peas and Massive Attack, to name just a few.

Ibrahim brings 25 years, four continents and several generations of music making to the stage. Her poetics have won over musicians, composers and producers alike including Juno-Award-winners Kemo (Rascalz) and DJ Serious (Quartertones).

MC Isis and DJ Nana will pick up where Ibrahim leaves off, blurring the lines between hip hop, jazz and world music with their wordplay and beats.

Advanced $10 tickets are available at Outdoor Adventures, located in the same building as Arm Chair Books. Tickets are $15 at the door. Doors open 9 p.m.
