Director of golf, Patrick Bowers, said the Arnold Palmer-designed course will not be altered but the fairways and amenities will be upgraded and enhanced. Bowers said the goal is to “solidify Whistler’s status as one of the great golf destinations in the world.”
As renovations take place, a nine-hole par 34 layout will remain open for public use and a special ‘renovation’ green fee of $35 will be in effect until the official re-launch, slated for July 15.
The improvements will include:
• Re-grading and re-sodding of 10 fairways;
• New cart paths to all 18 holes;
• A new halfway refreshment house and restrooms;
• A new washroom stationed at the 5th hole, and an upgrade to existing
washroom on 14th hole;
• The installation of a self-contained pumphouse and well system to end reliance on municipal supplies;
• Conversion to a radio-controlled irrigation system;
• A new tournament/guest host headquarters beside the first tee;
• New drainage on all renovated holes;
• Modernization of bridges;
• New tees to lengthen specific holes or alleviate destructive wear
patterns and;
• Enlargement of ponds to add challenge and provide reservoir for the irrigation system.
This year’s renovations will complete the club’s modernization plans. Last year bunker improvements were made and a 6,500 square foot putting and chipping green added and, in 1997, the new 4,800 square-foot clubhouse was opened.
