Whistler RCMP have busted a Whistler employee and charged him with multiple thefts. RCMP received information from a local business that an employee had allegedly been voiding sales of $150 to $250 a day over a period of four months. During that time, more than $10,000 is alleged to have been stolen. In a sting operation, officers monitored a 25 year-old male employee, while purchasing goods using marked cash. RCMP say they witnessed the clerk voiding sales and later found $250, including their money, in his possession. The accused will appear in court May 21 to face multiple theft charges. Two other employees, who were roommates of the accused, will be called as witnesses. RCMP Cst. Warren Tomalty says internal theft is becoming a big concern in Whistler. "The problem here is not shoplifters, it’s internal thefts," says Tomalty. "A human factor statistic says that 80 per cent of the population, if given the chance to shoplift, would take advantage. "A lot of people are transient and employers don’t know who they’re hiring, it’s a big business here." Tomalty says Whistler RCMP officers spend a considerable amount of time investigating internal thefts, and that employers need to monitor their staff and cash flow.
