Thirty amateurs, six pros to present Nature Slideshow

Naturalist event part of Celebration 2010: Whistler Arts Festival

The response to a call-out for amateur nature photography was overwhelming, with 30 individuals each submitting five pictures to present at the Whistler Nature Slideshow on Thursday, Feb. 24.

"We actually had a pretty good response, we definitely weren’t expecting 30 people to come forward, and the pictures are really good," said Tracy Howlett, who is organizing the slideshow for the Whistler Naturalists.

"Probably 80 to 90 per cent of the content is local, which puts a neat perspective on things, but there are some from farther afield as well. I think people will be impressed by the talent in the community."

Of the 150 pictures submitted, the directors from the Naturalists will whittle the field down to between 10 and 20 pictures, and members from the audience will be able to vote for their favourites at the intermission.

Following the intermission, the pro photographers will take over with five-to-10 minute displays by Dave Humphries, Jeff Purrlman, Leanna Rathkelly, Bruce Rowles, Alain Denis and Rich Duncan. All shows will be set to music.

The event takes the place of the Whistler Naturalists speaker series, which will return next month.

Admission is by donation, with a suggested donation of $7. The show gets underway at 7:30 p.m.
