Broderick Thompson scored Nor-Am Cup gold for the first time at Nakiska, Ski Area in Alberta last week.
He hasn't been able to maintain the Midas touch, though, as he didn't finish the other three events on the docket.
Along with Erik Read, the Whistler Mountain Ski Club (WMSC) member posted the best time in the super-G at Nakiska on Feb. 19, as both shared top prize after a time of one minute, 2.94 seconds (1:02.94). There was also a tie for the bronze medal as Americans Tommy Ford and Kieffer Christianson were both 0.07 seconds behind.
Three other WMSC members hit the top 25 in the race as Brodie Seger was seventh, Jack Crawford was 12th and Riley Seger was 19th.
Crawford posted another strong showing on Feb. 21 with an eighth-place finish in the giant slalom with a combined time of 2:00.26. He was 1.23 seconds behind winner Gino Caviezel of Switzerland.
In a second giant slalom on Feb. 22, Crawford placed 10th with a time of 1:58.30, 1.29 seconds behind winner Justin Murisier of Switzerland. Fellow WMSC member Ford Swette was 17th.
The Nor-Am Cup stop kicked off with a slalom race at Calgary's Canada Olympic Park on Feb. 17. Brodie Seger was 21st and Swette 25th. No WMSC competitors hit the top 25 in the next day's event.
On Feb. 24, Alpine Canada announced Crawford, Thompson and Brodie Seger would represent Canada 2015 FIS Alpine Junior World Ski Championships in Hafjell, Norway, from March 5 to 14, 2015.
On the ladies' side, two local racers were in the top 25 in the slalom on Feb. 21 as Stefanie Fleckenstein was 19th and Rae Swette was 24th. Swette was then 23rd the following day.
In the Nakiska races, Swette was 25th in the giant slalom on Feb. 17, while Charley Field was 17th in the same event the next day. Swette and Field were back-to-back – 14th and 15th, respectively, in the super-G on Feb. 19, while Swette was also 18th in the alpine combined the same day. The pair then wrapped the time in Nakiska with another super-G on Feb. 20 in which Swette was 13th and Field 16th.
Whistler Nordics hauls medals at provincials
A small group of Nordic skiers made out like bandits at the 2015 Teck BC Cross Country Ski Championships in Kelowna on Feb. 20 and 21.
Competing in the juvenile girls' category, Benita Peiffer topped the list, scoring a gold medal in skate skiing for her performance on Feb. 21, which was a day after she took silver in the mass start classic race.
Meanwhile, teammate Mila Wittenberg was also a double medallist, earning silver at the midget girls 2 level in both events. Coach Brent Murdoch also doubled up, taking silver in the masters' mass start before nabbing a bronze in the skate ski event the next day. Michael Murdoch was in second for much of the juvenile boys' classic race, but a fall dropped him to fourth. He rebounded the next day, though, with a skate ski silver.
In the midget boys' field, Joe Davies had some tough luck, finishing fourth in both events. In the midget girls' 1 division, Linnea Uunila was 10th in the classic before moving up to sixth in the skate ski race and in the juvenile girls' 2 category, Julia Long placed 13th in the classic and 17th in the skate ski.
Wittenberg and Peiffer also won the overall aggregate titles for their season-long dominance.
Whistler BMX to host fundraiser
Whistler BMX is taking steps to gather remaining funds for its planned track at Bayly Park.
The group has planned a screening of the 1986 BMX movie Rad, starring Bill Allen and Full House's Lori Loughlin. The film will air at 7 p.m. on Friday, March 6 at Rainbow Theatre. Admission is a $10 minimum donation.
