Three injured in restaurant explosion

Three people sustained minor injuries yesterday after an explosion occurred in La Bocca, a popular European style bistro in Whistler Village.

Three people sustained minor injuries yesterday after an explosion occurred in La Bocca, a popular European style bistro in Whistler Village.

“You could hear the explosion,” said a worker at nearby Citta’s Bistro in the main village area who wanted to remain anonymous.

“It wasn’t massive, but you felt the floor vibrate a little. Then we heard a big kind of boom and we said, ‘what was that?’”

Aki Kaltenbach, the business manager of La Bocca, said all three of those injured were recovering after being taken to the Whistler Health Care Centre.

“They were staff and they are all fine now,” she said.

“No-one was seriously injured, they were more shocked than anything.”

The RCMP does not suspect foul play. But the explosion, which happened around 2 p.m., is being investigated by the fire department.

Neighbouring businesses were evacuated at the time but were back in operation last night.

“It appears to be an explosion of some sort in the kitchen,” said RCMP Staff Sgt. Steve LeClair.

“It is not believed suspicious in nature and the fire dept is continuing to investigate to see if they can determine the cause of the explosion.”
