It’s been almost two years since Whistler’s Dave Sheets passed away after a collision with another skier, but his friends are keeping his memory and the foundation they created in his name alive.
On Sunday, Feb. 13, the second anniversary of Sheets’s death, his friends will be hosting Three Sheets to the Wind at the Garibaldi Lift Co. Admission is by donation, and Whole Lotta Led will be providing the entertainment.
All proceeds from the event will go towards the Dave Sheets Memorial Fund, which is under the Whistler Health Care Foundation umbrella. According to Chris Quinlan, one of Sheets’s friends and the fund’s representative at the foundation, they have so far raised $25,000 for critical care equipment.
"Our long-term goal is to see a CT scanner in Whistler, but right now the goal is to help the foundation purchase critical care equipment to save lives," said Quinlan. "Again, we don’t know if anything could have helped Sheets, but this is the kind of thing we thought he’d like to see the money go towards."
The public is invited to come out and see the band, and make a contribution to the memorial fund.
Dave Sheets was skiing on Blackcomb on Feb. 13, 2003, when he collided with another skier. He was diagnosed with a head injury by ski patrol, and flown to Vancouver General Hospital where he succumbed to his injury. He was 31.
