Jasper Wood’s violin is not an unfamiliar sound to Whistler, but the award-winning University of B.C. violin professor joins two of his best friends for his next Whistler show with Triple Forte tuning in Saturday, March 3 at 8 p.m. at MY Millennium Place.

“For us, the show is a lot of fun,” Wood said. “We are all good friends and we like to make good chamber music.”

Triple Forte is composed of three renowned soloists: Wood, cellist Yegor Dyachkov and pianist David Jalbert.

The three chums will rove from late Beethoven to the passionate romantics to the wit and humor of Ravel and Ives. The repertoire aims to unearth lesser-known compositions as well.

The playbill for the evening includes the Haydn trio in e-flat minor — an unusual key for the 18th-century composer.

“It’s quite a dark key for him to write in,” Wood said. “It’s a piece a lot of people don’t know…. I like to have the opportunity to bring it to people so they can love it as much as we do.”

Other pieces to love include the Beethoven Opus 70, no. 2 and Canadian work by Kelly Marie Murphy.

“She has very exciting work,” Wood said. “She has a lot of really intense rhythms. It will contrast the other pieces we will be performing. It’s almost like rock and roll in a sense with fast hand offs. We have to be on the edge of our toes to play it.”

The three men are more than ready for the challenge; all boast extensive resumes.

Wood has played with North America’s top orchestras, from Montreal to Victoria and Newfoundland to Toronto. He’s won numerous awards in the U.S., Canada and Europe for his talent. His music can also be heard frequently on National Public Radio in the U.S. as well as CBC Radio in Canada. His most recent album was released on the Endeavour Classics label.

Fellow Forte member Jalbert also released a new album last year, to great applause, with a recording of Faure’s complete Nocturnes. Jalbert was a guest soloist with the Montreal, Vancouver, Toronto and Winnipeg Symphonies as well as the National Arts Centre Orchestra and National Symphony of Ireland. The Julliard School graduate has performed in Canada, the U.S., Mexico and Europe. He can also be heard regularly on CBC.

Dyachkov rounds out the talented trio, bringing an extensive performance repertoire to the stage, including invitations from notable ensembles such as the Montreal Symphony Orchestra, The Royal Philharmonic Orchestra of Flanders, the CBC Vancouver Orchestra, Musici de Montreal, the Nouvel Ensemble Moderne and the Geneva Chamber Orchestra.

Talent, experience and youth are common threads amongst the three.

“(Our youth) probably comes across in our energy and enthusiasm,” Wood said. “I’d like to say it doesn’t come out in our interpretations. We like to show our maturity there. In fact, our ability to tour night after night shows a youthful stamina.”

A stamina that is infectious, insightful and inspiring right from modern-day Kelly Marie Murphy to classic Brahms in C minor.

Tickets for this musical force times three are $22 for adults and $19 for students, seniors, Whistler Arts Council and MY Place members.
