To all those who wish to leave a historic mark in the park, minus graffiti and defamation, this is the year. The Whistler Museum and Archives Society is organizing a community time capsule burial as a fund-raising event for 2000. In co-operation with the Resort Municipality of Whistler, WMAS has suggested that there might be a suitable place in the new Village Park. Timing is ideal for the proposal since the remaining phases of the park are to be developed in the summer and fall of 1999. The capsule will have a capacity of approximately three cubic feet and will be buried in two parts on two separate dates. The first section will contain large articles such as skis, suits and other gear and will be buried the September long weekend, close to Whistler’s 25th anniversary. The second half will contain signatures, coins, publications by Whistler authors, restaurant menus and photos and is to be buried sometime in February, weather permitting. The capsule is a metal container that is to be placed inside an indigenous rock cairn with feet on the bottom and a sundial carved on top. The sundial will be visible above ground and a feature of the park. "There will be a big blitz at the end of the century," says Darlyne Christian, museum president. "Whistler has never done this. We plan to have the capsule buried for 25 years, then it is to be opened on the 50th anniversary of the Resort Municipality of Whistler." Activities of 1999 will be featured in the commemorative material. The theme, "I was in Whistler in the 20th Century" will help promote public involvement in the capsule sealing event and there will be a means for people to sign their names. Residents and visitors will be invited to commemorate the closing of the 20th century at Whistler.
