Tonight's fireworks cancelled

Entertainment in Whistler Olympic Plaza continues on Saturday, July 9 with Reggae & Ska Night featuring Redeye Empire.

The fireworks in Skiers Plaza scheduled for the Independence Day Celebrations this evening in have been cancelled due to the expected High Fire rating in southern B.C.

With the recent increase in temperature, forest fuels may be very dry and could result in a serious fire risk. If there is a High Fire rating, open burning and industrial activities may be restricted.

"The fire rating was at high on Saturday and then the small amount of rain dropped us down; however, as we can see by the change in weather, this can cause the fire rating to jump right back up to high," said Rob Whitton, Whistler fire chief.

"As we rely on the provincial danger classification website and since there is currently no viable danger class information, we've erred on the side of caution. It's a risk that we're not willing to assume should the danger classification drastically change."
