New trail section completed

The construction of the new hydrogen gas facility adjacent to the municipal works yard at Nesters impacted an old access trail into the Cut Yer Bars area. Last Saturday, May 22, a volunteer crew built a new section of trail that reconnects this link and provides a good transition for riders coming out of the Lost Lake trails at Spruce Grove.

Mr. Richer's Grade 5 and 6 classes from Myrtle Philip Community School named the trail Area 56.

Bear Back Biking sponsored the trail event, providing sandwiches and drinks for the trail workers.

The next volunteer trail day is June 5, which is also International Trials Day. Ticket2Ride is sponsoring that event.

The meeting time is 9 a.m. at a location to be announced, though likely at the south end of town. Visit www.worca.com for updates.

Mountain bikers urged to fight Chilcotin Road deactivations

For years the Chilcotins and Spruce Lake have been the second home to Sea to Sky mountain bikers, flocking to the area on sunny days to enjoy some long, high alpine riding that is unmatched in this part of the province.

However, the bike community recently became aware that the Ministry of Forests and Range has applied to decommission over 18 km of Forest Service Roads in the area, including some roads that are used to access the more popular trails.

The list of road closures includes Mud Creek to Paradise Creek, Mud Creek to Tyaughton North, Texas Creek to Skimath Creek, and West Pavilion Branch 14 and Branch 15.

Decommissioning the roads will include removing bridges and culverts.

The ministry is accepting public feedback on the proposal at Shane.Stockwell@gov.b.c.ca. A copy of the information bulletin and amp is available at www.worca.com or the Whistler Bike Co. website at www.bikeco.ca.

PVTA hosts trail fundraiser

The Pemberton Valley Trails Association is hosting a fundraiser on Friday, June 11 at 8 p.m. at the Pemberton Community Centre. The event will feature a multimedia and slideshow presentation, refreshment and music. Tickets are $10 in advance at the Pemberton Bike Co., going up to $12 at the door.

Pemberton's trails are in the spotlight more than ever with locals organizing the first epic mountain bike race in the area for a long time, the NimbyFifty on May 29, and the last stage of the Four Queens, which runs from July 8 to 11.

Skating Club in the medals

The Whistler Skating Club had a strong showing at the Victoria Day Interclub competition in Surrey this past week, which included a new program called "performance evaluation" for kids at the Elementary Level. The focus of this event is on performance, with the judges providing evaluation and feedback, as well as bronze, silver or gold ribbons based on their performance.

In the regular competition Lydia Robertons placed first in the Pre-Preliminary Ladies 10 and Under Group 3.

Noam Steele was first in Pre-Preliminary Men.

Jandzeela Tompins was eighth in Preliminary Ladies 10 and Under.

In the performance evaluation both Abbey Dekok and Caitlin Patterson were awarded silver ribbons, and Miori Chigama, Emelia Leigh, Kristjan Rohde and Nikolas Rohde received bronze.
