Top finishes for Whistler triathletes

Local athletes on podium in sprint triathlon, half iron

Whistler’s Dawn Titus finished 61 st overall out of more than 200 competitors, and first in the women’s 45 to 59 age category at the Oliver Sprint Triathlon on Sunday, swimming 600 metres, biking 20 km and running 5 km in a time of 1:12:47.

Denise McLaughlin of Garibaldi Highlands, the winner of the Whistler Valley Trail Run this year, was the top Sea to Sky athlete in the race, finishing 58 th overall and second in the women’s 30 to 34 event.

Garth Riess of Pemberton also took part, finishing 19 th and 16 th in the men’s 50 to 54 group in 1:44:39.

In the New Balance Half Iron which took place on the same day in Victoria, Marie-Anne Prevost of Whistler finished an amazing eighth overall among women, and third in the 30 to 34 age category with a time of 5:06:54. A half iron includes a 2 km swim, a 90 km bike and 21.1 km run.

Christine Cogger also had a strong race, finishing 42 nd out of 214 women and 11 th in the 30 to 34 age category.

Christine Suter did not get a run time, but was an incredible ninth after the swim, and 16 th overall on the bike.

Aenea Cameron of Squamish was 103 rd among women and 13 th in the women’s 45 to 49 group in 6:03:43.

Paul Suter was solid as always in the men’s half iron, finishing 58 th overall and fourth in the 45 to 49 category in 4:54:10.

Bob Deeks finished one spot behind Suter in the age category and 73 rd overall in 4:58:47.

Ben Eksteen of Garibaldi Highlands finished 83 rd and 23 rd in the 30 to 34 race in 5:01:43.

Pete Breman of Squamish also took part, finishing 258 th overall and 34 th in the 25 to 29 race in 6:02:02.

In the relay category, the Whistler Tri Hards men’s team finished first overall out of 51 teams with a combined time of 4:30:14. The Tri Hards were Paul Nicholas, Kevin Titus and Andrew #####GET LAST NAME.

Both Dawn Titus and Denise McLaughlin earned berths on the provincial team for the national trials.
