After two sold out shows on Monday evening, Touching the Void, the documentary film adaptation of Joe Simpson’s best-selling mountaineering saga has been secured for an additional week of screenings at Village 8 Cinemas beginning tonight.

The film launched the Whistler Film Festival Society’s Reel Alternatives monthly film series with two evening screenings. Advance tickets available at the Escape Route and the cinema box office sold out well before showtime, with several patrons turned away.

The retaining of Touching the Void is a unique incident and at this time, upcoming screenings in the Reel Alternatives series are to continue as single evening events.

Mountaineering feature films have been drawing consistently strong numbers at local screenings. During the 2003 Whistler Film Festival last December, a second theatre at Village 8 was commandeered for an impromptu showing of Vancouver director Ivan Hughes’ Squamish-based historical climbing documentary In The Shadow of the Chief due to audience response. The film won the People’s Choice award for the best film of the festival.

Whistler Film Festival calls for entries

It may seem like December is a long way off, but on Filmmaker Standard Time it’s just around the corner.

The Fourth Annual Whistler Film Festival, set for Dec. 2-5, 2004, is now accepting entries. Awards are given out in several categories including best feature, Canadian film, documentary, short film, adventure film and more.

Deadline for submissions has been set for Sept. 10, 2004.
