Tough weekend, but gymnasts still in the ribbons

The Whistler Gymnastics Club’s competitive team continued their season last weekend at a meet host by Flicka Gymnastics in North Vancouver.

With a huge turnout of gymnasts – up to 40 in some categories – from around the Lower Mainland the girls had their work cut out for them.

The top performer was Level 1 Novice Nicola Halliwell, who placed fifth on both the vault and the beam, while her teammate Bianca Duval was seventh on bars and eighth on beam out of 19 competitors. Level 1 Tyro Lenka Prochazka was 10 th on the vault, while Level 3 Frances Moody was 11 th on floor.

"The girls did really well but unfortunately it was a really tough competition, they were up against full-time facilities where the girls get two to three times as much training time each week," said Whistler Gymnastics coach Tami Ross. "For a lot of our girls it was their first provincial level competition, and other girls moved up into new categories from last year. Overall the girls should be proud of themselves for how well they did with their own routines. We’ll have more competitions in the future against clubs that are more our size, and that’s when we’ll start to see the results."

Other participants from the club included Rebecca Flynn, Desiree Smith, Jasmin Budge, Shannon Macdonald, Annik Tetreault, and Sonya D’Artois.

The rest of the club also got into the action this week by celebrating National Gymnastics Awareness Week. The youngest athletes played Valentine’s Day games on Monday and were rewarded with lots of prizes. The recreational athletes held their annual ribbon day on Tuesday, with coaches handing out ribbons to athletes for showing off skills, while their parents watched from the sidelines.

The competitive athletes will also get a lesson in sports nutrition from Tracy Higgs, and will take part in a Gym-A-Thon on Friday to raise money for their new uniforms.

The club’s next meet is in Surrey on March 4.
