Following increased opposition to rezoning for pensions and bed and breakfasts in residential neighbourhoods council has decided to put a moratorium on new tourist accommodation outside the village. The moratorium is intended to give council time to come up with an overall strategy for tourist accommodation outside the village and to answer concerns about protecting the integrity of residential neighbourhoods. It’s not only the pensions and bed and breakfasts council is concerned about. There have been complaints about privately owned houses and cabins being rented out by the night or the week. A number of property management companies have been renting such private residences for years. Municipal bylaws prohibit rental of residential accommodation for less than a month at a time. Club cabins are also a concern in some neighbourhoods. Municipal staff intend to set up a public meeting, including the Whistler Resort Association, to discuss the broader issue, rather than individual cases. Earlier this year council placed a moratorium on further pension and bed and breakfast rezoning applications until new design guidelines could be introduced. Those guidelines are now in place. There are a couple of pension rezoning applications in the system which will be dealt with, but new applications will not be considered until after the public meeting.
