WORCA is hosting a trail maintenance night this Friday, July 18
at the access to White Knuckles. Meet a 5:30 p.m. at the access to White
Knuckles, just past the Rainbow Development and across the highway from Trudy’s
Landing. Volunteers will walk the reroute of Shit Happens and Anal Intruder, do
some minor repairs and brushing, and assess the trails for future work during
upcoming trail maintenance days.
Participants who assist at WORCA trail days will be invited to
a WORCA volunteer event at the end of the summer. Volunteers who helped with
the work on Cat Scratch Fever are especially welcome on Friday, as WORCA is
looking for people with trail experience to head up projects at different work
sites.
Segger-Gigg ninth ad Badwater Ultramarathon
Squamish ultra runner Jen Segger-Gigg was ninth overall across
the finish line and fifth among women in the 2008 Badwater Ultramarathon
— a 135 mile/217 km marathon from the bottom of California’s Death Valley
to the top of Mt. Whitney Portals, with a total vertical gain of almost 4,000
metres and just 1,400 metres of descending.
Temperatures were relatively low this year, barely climbing
over 40 degrees Celsius, which allowed Jamie Donaldson of Colorado to shatter
the previous women’s record by more than an hour. She finished in 26 hours, 51
minutes and 33 seconds, breaking the record of 27:56:47 set by Pam Reed in
2002.
Segger-Gigg was racing at Badwater for the first time, and was
the youngest competitor ever to qualify for the event. She finished with a time
of 32:31:57.
Morland third in Mt. 7 Pyschosis
With the exception of the annual Garbanzo Downhill, the annual Mt. 7 Psychosis in Golden, B.C. is the longest mountain bike race in the province. It starts with a white-knuckle ride down a steep, dusty slope before dropping into the woods for some incredible technical riding. The total decent is about 1,300 metres, and times generally range from 12 to 22 minutes.
This was the 10 th year for the event.
Whistler riders did well as always, with Tyler Morland placing third in the men’s race behind Chris Kovarik and Nick Quinn. J.S. Therrien was ninth, James McSkimming 16 th , and Will Dixon 35 th in the men’s category.
Claire Buchar of Whistler was first in the women’s race in 17:02.3, more than two minutes faster than the next fastest racer. Kari Mancer was fifth.
Kevin Phelps once again won the hardtail category, about 1:20 faster than the next racer. Ian Ritz was third, Julien Hein fourth, Gray Rodier fifth and Paddy Kaye sixth.
