The Sea to Sky Trail Society will be hosting its annual general meeting in conjunction with their first open house on Friday, July 5, at 7 p.m. in the Empress C Room at the Chateau Whistler Resort. The open house and annual general meeting is to offer members of the public an opportunity to become better informed about both the progress and potential of the trail development project. Society directors will showcase a comprehensive proposal and maps for the dedicated recreation and alternative transportation route which will link the respective communities in the Sea to Sky corridor. Key stakeholders involved in the process will also be identified. The society’s plan outlines the most feasible and logistical trail route determined to date between Squamish and D’Arcy. The society hopes to attract volunteers to assist with trail building this summer, particularly the section from Whistler North to the Shadow lake Demonstration Forest. The society is also seeking new directors and members. A slide show at the meeting will highlight the trail itself and the inaugural Sea to Sky Mountain Bike Trail Ride, a non-competitive ride, on July 13 and 14. The two-day ride is an opportunity for mountain bike enthusiasts to experience the trail with others. Organizers of the ride have arranged for aid stations during the ride, as well as stationing mechanics on the trail to assist with minor repairs. Camping equipment and other baggage will be transported by van from D’Arcy to Whistler, where riders will camp July 13, and to Squamish the following day. Barbecues will be held at both Whistler and Squamish. The two-day ride includes about 85 kilometres, and a net elevation gain of 1,200 feet, on the first day between D’Arcy and Whistler. The second day is about 55 kilometres and has a net elevation loss of 2,200 feet. Riders who don’t want to do the hilly first day can ride the second day only. The Sea to Sky Mountain Bike Trail Ride is also a fund-raiser for trail construction. Riders are being asked to raise pledges — although they don’t have to — for the ride. Prizes will be presented to those who raise the most pledges. Registration and an entry fee of $89 is required ($10 less for members of WORCA or SORCA). Registration includes transportation of packs, lunch both days, refreshments, live music, mechanical support, a T-shirt and eligibility for draw prizes. Registration can be done by calling SEA 2 SKY.
