Trail runners climb Cypress

Next 5 Peaks race is Whistler

The B.C. 5 Peaks Trail Running Series continued at Cypress Mountain this past Saturday, after being delayed several months due to the heavy snowpack and late start to summer.

As in all races there was both a short course (approximately 6 km) and enduro course (12 km), almost entirely on local cross-country and singletrack trails.

Several corridor residents took part in the race, which is a prelude to the Whistler 5 Peaks run on Aug. 26.

In the enduro race, which boasted over 450 metres of climbing, Mt. Currie’s Sean Wolfe placed seventh overall in 1:07:30, winning the Men’s 40 to 49 category.

Whistler’s Walter Wallgram placed 31 st out of 174 participants in one hour, 18 minutes and 18 seconds. He was also fourth out of 28 runners in the Men’s 40 to 49 category.

Finishing one spot back in 1:19:02, as well as third in the women’s 20 to 29 group and fourth among all women, was Lina Augaitis.

Robert Tan was 51 st overall and seventh in the Men’s 40 to 49 category in 1:23:31.

Loreth Beswetherick finished in 1:57:22, 12 th in the Women’s 40 to 49 category.

In the 6 km sport category Tracy Jackson placed 51 st out of 154 athletes and fourth in the Women’s 40 to 49 race in 46:55.

Roxy Beswetherick, Loreth’s daughter, was 18 th in the Women’s 20 to 29 group in 1:03:08. Marlin Beswetherick also raced in the Women’s 10 to 14 age group, placing third in 1:03:09.

Registration is going strong for the Whistler 5 Peaks race, with organizers expecting upwards of 600 racers this year. The courses will be slightly different than last year, but once again the venue is the high alpine of Whistler Mountain.

Registration and fax-in registration forms are available online at www.5peaks.com .

Day of race registration is also available at the Salomon Store in the Westin Resort and Spa between 8 a.m. and 9:45 a.m. for an additional $5. The Whistler race is $35 in advance and $40 on race day, which includes a chance to win draw prizes at the awards ceremony.

The Children’s Challenge takes place at 10:30 a.m., and both the Sport and Enduro races will start together at 11 a.m.

The Whistler event is the fourth out of five events in the B.C. 5 Peaks series, following races on May 13 in Golden Ears, on July 22 at Mount Seymour, and Aug. 12 at Cypress Mountain. The final race in the series is at Buntzen Lake on Sept. 23.

There are also 5 Peaks Series in Alberta, Ontario, Quebec. With B.C., the series comprises 22 races.
