Best New Year’s ever for WAVE transit

Although there were over 20,000 Whistler bus riders on New Year’s day, there were almost no reports of bad incidences from bus drivers or fellow travellers.

"It was the best New Year’s ever," said Kristi Well, who is the council representative on the Transit Management Committee.

In a presentation to council Wells reported that overall transit ridership during the Christmas season went up by 15 per cent.

"This is higher than the occupancy increase and the population increase," said Wells, who hoped it was a sign that people are using alternate transportation.

The bus route with the biggest increase was the staff housing route up to the Glacier Creek employee housing. This increase may have had something to do with the added 2 a.m. bus up to the residences for the throngs of people leaving the village bars. Wells said this added bus was very popular.

All other routes experienced an increase as well, she added.
