Transportation targeted during Clean Air Week

Are you in a fog? Then hop on the bus, Gus. Or get on your bike, Mike. That’s what the Resort Municipality of Whistler would like visitors and locals to do during this year’s Clean Air Week.

Are you in a fog? Then hop on the bus, Gus. Or get on your bike, Mike.

That’s what the Resort Municipality of Whistler would like visitors and locals to do during this year’s Clean Air Week.

The RMOW would like to help people breathe easier and is hosting a number of events June 4-8 aimed at increasing public awareness about clean air and climate change.

Festivities kick off a couple of days early on Saturday, June 2 as the WAVE bus system will offer free transit from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. and the Whistler Cycling Committee will hold an open house in the village from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. to gather information on an alternative transportation plan.

Clean Air Week then kicks off Monday, June 4 with a week-long commuter challenge event to try and encourage Whistlerites to get out of their cars. Myrtle Philip Community School will also be hosting a bicycle safety day.

More events take place Wednesday., June 6 on national Clean Air Day including:

• WAVE will be offering free bus rides and running a contest with more than $200 in prizes;

• Myrtle Philip Community School and the B.C. Lung Association will be hosting a kite-flying day to raise awareness about air quality;

• RMOW staff will be riding a 29-person bike through the village to raise funds for the Heart and Stroke Foundation of B.C. and Yukon;

• Whistler Cycling Committee will hold another open house at Millennium Place from 3-7 p.m. on their cycling network plan.
