Travel Options rescheduled for March The Travel Options program — a workshop from B.C. Transit that educates employers and employees on the advantages of leaving the car at home — has been rescheduled for March 5. This will give Whistler's Transportation Advisory Group (TAG) more time to promote the Travel Options program to local businesses and organizations, and the municipal council more time to consider the recommendations in TAG's Comprehensive Transportation Strategy. "It's a way to educate yourself and your employees on the big picture and understand the need to be a part of the transportation strategy," says Susie Ross, the Transportation Demand Management Co-ordinator for Whistler. "Once people can see for themselves the benefits in finding alternate forms of travel to the single passenger vehicle, things will improve for everybody. "It's plus 2 degrees in the Yukon right now. They're barbecuing in Edmonton. I don't think anybody can deny global warming any more." To sign your business up for Travel Options, contact Ross at the municipality at 932-5535, extension 276 or Travel Options facts: Save Time – For distances up to 5 km, cycling is faster than driving. For distances of 2 km or less, walking is faster. By taking transit, you can use the time to read or catch up on work. Save Money – Owning and operating a new car costs an average of $7,000 each year. Operating a bike costs $150. Car pooling can cut your costs in half, van pooling by 75 per cent and transit by 90 per cent. For an employer, alternative transportation cuts parking space costs and opens up spaces for customers. Stay Healthy – Health Canada recommends spending between 30 and 60 minutes each day engaged in physical activity. Walking or cycling 15 minutes to work and 15 minutes home goes a long way to meeting that fitness requirement. For an employer, that means happier, healthier employees and less absenteeism due to illnesses.
