Triathletes just peachy in Penticton

Just one week after the Squamish Triathlon, members of the Whistler Triathlon Club made another strong showing at the Investors Group Peach Classic Triathlon in Penticton Sunday, July 18.

Seven Whistler athletes took part in the race, braving temperatures that climbed into the mid-30s as they completed a 1.5 km swim, a 40 km bike and a 10 km run.

At the top of the list for the second week in a row was David Higgins. Higgins was 15 th overall in the Squamish Triathlon and second in his age category with a time of two hours, eight minutes and 21 seconds. On the Penticton course, which was a lot more challenging with a hilly bike ride and run, Higgins was 21 st overall, 20 th out of 326 men and fifth in the men’s 30 to 34 age category. He completed the race in a time of 2:12:43.

Paul Nicholas finished the race in 2:21.31, finishing 13 th in the men’s 35 to 39 group and 59 th overall.

Marie-Anne Prevost had another strong race, this time finishing second in the women’s 30 to 34 category in 2:29:27. The week before she was third in her age group.

With two strong results under her belt, Prevost qualified for the provincial triathlon team.

Orsa Horvath finished in 2:40:41, 11 th in the women’s 25 to 29 category and 198 th overall.

David McColm was 29 th in the 45 to 49 group with a time of 3:01:18.

Both Horvath and McColm were competing in their first Olympic distance triathlons after enrolling in Val Burke’s triathlon clinic.

Greg Sandkuhl was seventh in the men’s 60 to 64 race with a time of 2:52:25.

Murray Coates, racing in the 60-64 group, was 14 th in 3:44:41.

Christine Suter, who divides her time between Whistler and Penticton, was fifth in the women’s 35 to 39 race and 122 nd overall in 2:31:30. She was also the 19 th female overall.

Scott Young of Naramata, B.C. – also recently of Whistler – was 15 th in the men’s 30 to 34 race and 77 th overall in 2:25:42.
