Triathlon tests athletes new to the sport

Kids of Steel Triathlon enjoyed by all

Despite some early morning rain, organizers of the Kids of Steel Triathlon and Adult Try-a-Tri were rewarded with some perfect race conditions this past Saturday, May 28.

The adults swam 300 metres in the pool, followed by a 14 km bike on Alta Lake Road and a four kilometre run on the Valley Trail.

First overall was Craig Dale, who completed the race in 50 minutes and 41 seconds. Christopher Drozda of Vancouver was second in 53:42.

Lynda McCue, obviously an experienced triathlete, placed third overall and firm among women in 54:55, or almost seven minutes faster than the next female.

The third male, and fourth overall, was Jon Decaigny - also the fastest Whistler athlete in the race. In his first ever triathlon - training for the Squamish Triathlon in July - he finished in 55:56.

For the women, Shelley Gunn of Lillooet was second - seventh overall - in 1:02:40. Lucy Giblenn was third in 1:04:32.

The Kids of Steel race got underway a little earlier, with different courses depending on age categories.

In 8-9 Girls, the athletes swam 100 metres, biked two kilometres and ran a kilometre. Linneau Uunila of Squamish was first by just one second in 16:50, with Kaila Lafreniere of Whistler in second in 16:51. Charlotte Ross of Squamish was third in 17:44. Also from Whistler, Samantha Deally was fifth, Camie Matteau-Rushbrook sixth, Sydney Wilson eighth, Katie Faerge 12th, Jade Quinn McDonald 13th, Kristin Wheeler 14th and Aislinn Gannon 15th.

For the boys, Elias Carmichael of Langley was the athlete to beat with a time of 16:54. Dave Mehta of Whistler was second in 18:20, and Evan Fedder of Vancouver third in 19:18.

In 10-11 Girls, doing the same distances, Mila Wittenberg and Jennifer Lafreniere of Whistler were first and second in 15:39 and 16:07 respectively. Ainsely Greffard of Surrey was third in 17:11.

Other Whistler athletes were Lace Anderson in sixth, Gigi Kranjc in seventh, Aoife Gannon in eighth, Kerry Walker in 10th, Emelia Leigh in 12th and Sophie Saint-Jacques in 13th.

For the boys, Micky Williston of Squamish was first in 16:05, followed by Ben Bona of White Rock in 16:38 and Zachary Fedder in 16:54. From Whistler, Eric Smith was fourth and Rhys Higgins fifth.

The 12-13 Girls swam 300 metres, cycled 10 km and then ran three kilometres. Aimee Shannon of Vancouver was first in 50:20, followed by Whistler's Gabrielle Smith in 51:22 and Whistler's Ellie Krasny in 53:28. Also from Whistler, Gabe Velenosi was fourth and Keeley Wentzel fifth.

For the boys, Squamish's Eli Chappell was first in 45:19, followed by Vancouver's Ari Blondal in 46:01 and Whistler's Nolan Welsh in 46:53. Colin Faiella of Whistler was fourth.

In 14-15 Boys, first place went to Whistler's Tyler Welsh in 42:15, followed by Taylor Derynck in 47:26 and Luke Herron in 52:35.

Dorian Leech of Lillooet raced alone in 16-18 Boys, finishing a 500 metre swim, 14 km bike and four-kilometre run in 1:27:09.
