Just after 11 a.m. on Friday, Nov. 12 the Whistler RCMP received a call that a dump truck collided with a power line on Highway 99 between Hillcrest and Blueberry, and attended the scene with Whistler Fire Rescue Services and paramedics.
When they arrived they discovered that the truck had driven forward after dumping some asphalt on the highway, neglecting to lower the box afterwards. As a result the box got caught in two power lines that crossed the highway, knocking down a pole on the west side of the highway and pulling the power lines off several nearby houses.
Vehicles were detoured through Alta Vista, but it was a big job for B.C. Hydro to get the lines repaired and highway open. Power was out for an estimated 3,000 customers, including parts of the village and was not restored until 4:46 p.m. that afternoon.
There were no injuries, although the driver of the truck was charged with "Driving Without Due Care and Attention," as well as "Failing to Keep an Accurate Log Book."
Youth arrested for mischief
Just before 11 p.m. on Nov. 12 the Whistler RCMP received a report of youth causing a disturbance in the parking lot of a village hotel. When they attended the RCMP saw a broken fire receptacle that the police believe was damaged by the youth that were still at the scene. Three young males from Whistler and one from Vancouver were charged with mischief for the vandalism. During the investigation one of the Whistler males was found to be in possession of a large quantity of white powder believed to be Ecstasy, as well as several baggies containing marijuana. The youth is facing several drug charges and will make his first appearance in North Vancouver Court on Jan. 5, 2011.
Domestic assault charges lodged
A 47-year-old male from Vancouver is facing charges of Assault, Obstruction, Mischief and Forcible Confinement after receiving a report of a domestic assault at a local hotel at 11:27 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 12. The male was released with court documents and will make his first appearance on Jan. 19.
Man punches another, assaults police
On Nov. 14 at 1:28 a.m., the Whistler RCMP observed an assault taking place in the village, as a male punched another male in the face. The victim grabbed his attacker to prevent further punches and RCMP members quickly intervened to stop the fight, identifying themselves as police. The attacker then proceeded to assault a member of the RCMP. The RCMP attempted to arrest him, but he continued to resist.
A 32-year-old from Whistler is facing charges for Assault and Assault against a Police Officer, and was placed in handcuffs until he cooperated. He is also being charged for failing to comply with a probation order and obstructing police.
One IRP for the week
The Whistler RCMP handed down one Immediate Roadside Prohibition to a driver on Nov. 14 at approximately 11:48 p.m. at a road safety check stop on Highway 99 and Nicklaus North. The 32-year-old Whistler male failed the approved screening device, and received an immediate 90 day driving prohibition and 30 day impoundment.
The previous Friday, two drivers failed the roadside test, and two drivers tested in the "warn" range and received three-day driving prohibitions. There was also one driving suspension for drugs. On Saturday, the RCMP turned up one fail and three warns.
