Prime Minister Justin Trudeau was in West Vancouver Thursday evening to attend a $1,500-a-plate Liberal party fundraiser at the Gleneagles Golf Club on Marine Drive.
Supporters paid between $750 and $1500 a plate to attend the political fundraiser, according to information from the Liberals.
Prior to Trudeau's arrival, a group of environmental protesters waited in the rain outside the golf club, carrying signs with messages like "Trudeau: Pull up your socks on climate change!" and "LNG=Climate Change."
Tracey Saxby, executive director of the My Sea to Sky group, who was among the organizers of the protest, said neither Trudeau nor North and West Vancouver MPs Jonathan Wilkinson and Pamela Goldsmith-Jones stopped to speak to them.
West Vancouver's mayor elect Mary-Ann Booth - who had just had her election win confirmed in a recount at the Gleneagles Community Centre next door - was among the approximately 100 people who attended the event.
Earlier Thursday, Trudeau announced federal funding to build a hub for nuclear medicine at the TRIUMF facility at the University of British Columbia. The facility will research and develop radioactive medical isotopes used for medical diagnosis and treatment.
He also gave a speech to the Vancouver Board of Trade.
Trudeau referenced the government’s recently reached agreements on NAFTA, now known as the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement, the Trans-Pacific Partnership, which goes into effect at the end of the year and links Canada to 10 other nations, including Australia, Japan and New Zealand, and the Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement with the European Union.
Trudeau also met with Vancouver mayor-elect Kennedy Stewart and Surrey mayor-elect Doug McCallum.
