Whistler-Blackcomb is investigating the possibility of building a tubing park on the mountain.
"We’re definitely working on it," confirmed Rob McSkimming, Whistler-Blackcomb’s vice president of business development, this month.
But he cautioned there are still a lot of details yet to be worked out before a tubing park can become a reality on the slopes and the company is just in the preliminary stages of investigation.
Most significantly Whistler-Blackcomb staff are trying to figure out where a tubing park could go. One of their challenges is Whistler’s small base area. Adding a tubing park to the narrow ski out area could pose a problem.
McSkimming said Base II, on Blackcomb Mountain, is a possibility they are looking into.
Whistler-Blackcomb staff is also in the process of reviewing tubing parks at other Intrawest resorts, namely Mont Tremblant in Quebec, and Copper Mountain in Colorado.
The concept of a tubing park, which has long been talked about, was raised again in recent discussions among the Whistler 2020 task force dedicated to examining recreation and leisure in Whistler.
That task force developed a number of recommendations, such as creating an outdoor seasonal ice rink and an outdoor amphitheatre for live music events, as Whistler looks at ways to entice families to the resort community.
