Canada’s Melanie Turgeon came within three-tenths of a second of making a podium appearance in the women’s World Cup super-G at Lenzerheide, Switzerland on Feb. 25.
After a series of disappointing finishes, Turgeon turned it up a notch to finish fifth. The day before she finished 15 th in the downhill, frustrated by soft snow.
"Today was much better, it was harder," said the 24 year old from Beauport, Quebec. "I had another run and I stayed focused. I’m happy with the fifth place."
The gold medal went to Italy’s Isolde Kostner, her third win of the year, but her first in super-G. Renate Goetschl of Austria needed 57 points to stay in the hunt for the super-G title, and earned 80 with a second place finish. Carole Montillet of France came out of nowhere to win the bronze.
The next highest Canadian, in 39 th place, was Quebec racer Sara-Maude Boucher.
Turgeon is currently ranked fifth in the overall super-G standings, but with only the World Cup finals to go she is too far back in points to be in contention for the title.
