Melanie Turgeon, the star of the Canadian Alpine Ski Team with four trips to the World Cup podium last year, was among the athletes named to the ballot for the annual Canadian Press Female Athlete of the Year award – otherwise known as the Bobbie Rosenfeld Award.
Other athletes on the list include speed skater Catriona Le May Doan, golfer Lori Kane, and kayaker Karen Furneaux.
Turgeon came into this season ranked fourth in the super-G and sixth in the downhill, with three bronze medals and one silver. Whether or not she’ll win this award is up to Canadian sports editors and directors.
The Male Athlete of the Year award, the Lionel Conacher Award, will also be presented, as will the award for best team.
Bobbie Rosenfeld was a multi-sport athlete in the in the 1920s and ’30s who played guard for the Lakesides basketball squad, centre for the North Toronto Ladies ice hockey team, and short stop for the Hinde and Dauche softball club. She led all of her teams to championships.
She also participated in track and field events, and won the Toronto Ladies Grass Tennis Tournament in 1924.
