Turkey deals ready to be plucked

Resort celebrates Thanksgiving with turkey sales galore

Thrifty turkey sale shoppers are counting down the hours until its time to head to the stores to pluck some great deals in the now legendary Thanksgiving Day sales in Whistler.

The biggest of them all, the Whistler Blackcomb Turkey Sale, will see thousands of items discounted to move with the ski season just around the corner.

Skiers and boarders from all over the Sea to Sky, Metro Vancouver and beyond will gather at the Blackcomb Daylodge this weekend in hopes of acquiring all of their winter gear for a great price.

This year, Whistler Blackcomb will be filling up over 20,000 square feet of the Blackcomb Daylodge with discounted merchandise. Bargain hunters can expect to find up to 70 per cent off top-name brand equipment and accessories, as well as demo skis on clearance.

"The turkey sale has been happening in Whistler for over 20 years," said Whistler Blackomb's Lauren Everest in an email.

"It began as an early-season event to connect with our guests before the snow flies, and build excitement for the ski season, and is still all about that today."

If you are looking to save on ski and snowboard merchandise, but would rather avoid the line-ups and chaos that the turkey sale can bring, make sure to check out the sales going on elsewhere in Whistler as well.

"Having other stores onboard helps establish Whistler as a great destination for early season deals on ski and snowboard gear," said Everest. "Resort-wide participation helps encourage people to come up to Whistler for Thanksgiving weekend, check out the beautiful changing seasons, get excited for winter, and shop!"

For the second year, frozen turkeys will be on sale for $15 on Saturday, Oct. 12 starting at 9 a.m. — while quantities last. All proceeds from the Thanksgiving birds sold will go towards the Whistler Food Bank.

"Fall and spring are the busiest times of the year for us because more people are out of work, and so donations at this time of the year help us greatly by allowing us to shop week-to-week and focus on healthy eating," said Sara Jennings, food coordinator at the Whistler Food Bank.

Last year, Whistler Blackcomb was able to give a donation of $1,000 to the food bank from the proceeds of the frozen turkeys.

"For us, funds are more important than food, because they allows us to stretch the dollar further and target the funds based on our needs at the time," said Jennings.

"Most people who come to the food bank only come one to three times in a 12-month period... but it is important for people who are new to Whistler to know that there is a social services center in town, and that the food bank is only one part of it. One of the great things about our centre is that it allows people to connect to the other services in Whistler."

The turkey sale will be open to the general public from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 12 and Sunday, Oct. 13 and from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Monday, Oct. 14.

Locals, season pass holders, and EDGE card holders will have early access to the sale on Friday, Oct. 11 from 12 p.m. to 9 p.m. Proof of identification will be required at the door.

People can also purchase and pick up their seasons passes and EDGE Cards during the turkey sale weekend at the Village Guest Relations from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. until Oct. 15, or at Blackcomb Kids, which is located in the lower level of the Blackcomb Daylodge on Friday, Oct. 11 from 1 p.m. to 9 p.m., Saturday, Oct. 12 and Sunday, Oct. 13 from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., and Monday Oct. 14 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
