Highway 99 was closed for two hours on Saturday (Feb.18) following a serious crash near Culliton Creek.
Sgt. Wayne Pride of the Squamish RCMP reported the two-car head-on collision happened at about 7:30 p.m. one kilometre south of the Culliton Creek Bridge, often referred to as the Big Orange Bridge.
"Two occupants of a north bound vehicle were seriously injured, the single occupant of the south bound vehicle remains in critical condition in a Vancouver area hospital," Pride wrote in a statement released Tuesday (Feb. 21).
BC Ambulance confirmed that they had called for an air ambulance to transport victims, but due to the weather conditions the helicopter did not get clearance to fly. The injured parties were transported instead by ambulance.
Chris Harbord, a Communications and Media Manager with the
BC Ambulance Service confirmed that paramedics attended the scene.
"Two patients went to VGH and one to Lions Gate (Hospital) via Squamish General," said Harbord.
"All were in serious condition."
Pride couldn't reveal details of where the three people are from, but he confirmed they were not Squamish residents.
He added that the RCMP Sea To Sky Highway services department is investigating the accident. Initial reports indicate that road conditions were not a factor.
Pride said investigators are looking at driver error and charges are pending. He added there was no evidence of alcohol or drugs playing a role in the crash.
Reports from people on the road after the crash indicated there was single lane alternating traffic for a short period of time until the scene was cleaned up.
Traffic was moving again normally before 10 p.m.
